Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi) are the only living tropical seals on the planet. These sandy pinnipeds are one of only two mammals endemic to Hawaii—the other being the hoary bat . Monk seals are culturally significant to the indigenous peoples who call the seals īlio-holo-i-ka-uaua, meaning “dog that runs in rough water.”

They are unique for a seal, preferring solitude over large social groups. They are easily agitated, especially in the presence of humans, so it’s extremely important to give them the space and respect they deserve. They can be found on the beaches where they molt, relax, and rear pups but Hawaiian monk seals spend most of their time in the sea. They love eating nutritious sea food found on the sandy floors and coral reefs; they prefer reef fish, eel, lobster, and octopus, as well as other sandy flatfish.

Hawaiian monk seals have existed for nearly 13 million years and have experienced very little evolutionary change in that time. In a mere 50 years their population has dwindled by 60%. This is mostly due to human encroachment; this includes over-fishing, polluted oceans, habitat loss, climate change, as well as diseases brought upon them by stray cats (the stray cats are another advent of human irresponsibility.)

These seals are one of only two species of monk seal left in the world, the other being the Mediterranean monk seal. Their relative, the Caribbean monk seal, went extinct in the 1950s.

Recently, a video went viral of a tourist throwing a rock at a Hawaiian monk seal swimming peacefully in the waters near shore. The situation and outcome are both telling and inspiring. The tourist displays intense human arrogance and a disrespect for nature. However, the locals responded rapidly and vehemently, physically punishing the tourist for his actions against the culturally beloved seal. The tourist was punished by law but remained without remorse.

This event is a perfect example of how indigenous peoples and native cultures must be kept alive. Additionally, this addresses how these peoples must continue to have their voices heard, not only for advocacy but to scream at the wrongdoings of ignorant, non-native people. It is infuriating to witness this cishet white male from the “mainland” behave so utterly arrogant and disrespectful, but it’s equally as sweet to see him get his comeuppance from the locals.
